Used is likely the way to go here. Being a vendor, naturally I'd like to
see everyone buy a new iSeries server... from me! But, realistically,
since the QIC Tapes are supported under the maintenance on the server and
they're a Customer Install Feature, why not buy used?

This withdrawal of support was announced like two or three years ago. At
that time IBM announced 'incentives' to get folks to move to the 16GB
version or larger. However since the drive still worked during the
incentive period there was insufficient reason to do anything until it
was going to stop working (i.e. the install of V5R2). Now all the
incentives are dust and customer after customer is stuck purchasing a
replacement drive. Many are going used for compatibility, some are at
the right point to upgrade their systems (and bury the tape cost in the
upgrade), and others are staying at V5R1 for now.
