Oh, it happens all the time. My mom was quite torked that I was so late
with a card. The postmark proved that I sent it in a timely fashion. It
did take longer than Columbus did crossing the Atlantic to get it from
Indiana to Arizona.
Speaking of postmarks, they can be faked also. Years ago, (there is a
statute of limitations, right?) someone I knew backdated a life insurance
payment by messing with the date on a postage machine.

Actually, the check was mailed 10 days ago. Fort Wayne to Chicago is a
