My original suspicion would have been the diskette drive but then I had read
you were SWAPPING control units... No magnetic stuff nearby ? This is REALLY
weird !

Not on a UPS. Not too dirty a site either, plus as we speak I have
someone on-site to try to figure what is going on, and we've corrupted 6
diskettes just trying to get them back up (this is on two different
5394's that we have swapped out from the original)...perplexed...
