Joe, We have up to 10 people writing RPG to extract data and some add new screens etc. They test these programmes in a test environment and when happy move them to Live. I had thought that they could test these in batch and convert the DSPF and test them in a browser. I had hoped that the development could be done in WDSc, but I see a problem when you want to do something simple like a DSPFD etc. You'd have to look at the results in your spool files. Operators at the moment use the system screens for monitoring the system and setting up user profiles etc. I had thought that Ops Nav could do this for us. This has been my BIG problem with all these webfacing / PSC/400 tools. Yes you can convert your DSPFs and run your system in batch. But what do you do when you want to develop a new function involving 5 RPG programmers and lots of new DSPFs. I don't really want to go down the road of having two iSeries etc. When the new announcements were made, we assumed that IBM were trying to get theb likes of us onto standard machines, using webfacing and doing all our new RPG development using the WDSc and Operators on Ops Nav. What are the new standard editions for and who uses them ? Former green-screened sites ? Yes, we use Query 400 alot and UPDDTA etc & we develop in RPG . I thought there might be some other query tool that could replace Query 400 Thanks, Fergal "Joe Pluta" <joepluta@xxxxxxxxxx To: "Midrange Systems Technical Discussion" <midrange-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> ers.com> cc: Sent by: Subject: RE: webfacing and competing products midrange-l-bounces@x idrange.com 18/06/03 13:35 Please respond to Midrange Systems Technical Discussion THIS MESSAGE ORIGINATED ON THE INTERNET - Please read the detailed disclaimer below. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > From: fergal.o'flynn@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > > - If I've converted an application using Joe's PSC/400 product or > webfacing and I have a zero CPW Standard edition iSeries, what will happen > to the RPG programmers ? How many are you talking about? They can edit and compile using WDSC. The biggest problem is testing. One person can test at a time. If you think you're going to have lots of heavy testing, you may want to get a small P05 machine for development. It's still cheaper than the difference between the standard and enterprise edition machines. > - If I want to add new functionality for the users, new > data extarcts > etc, what can we use ? I'm aware that the Standard edition only allows one > green screened console ? I don't understand this question. Are you talking about using QUERY/400? If so, then you're right, that won't work on a standard edition machine. Nor will DFU or OS/400 menus. You have to develop your applications in RPG. Is this what you were asking?
