I guess you never know until you try. On the advice of John Ross I intitialized these disk units in my 170. After initializing them I was able to add them to a parity set and an ASP. I am now balancing the data and everything looks good so far. So regardless of what the handbook says, these 6713's do appear to work in a 170.
