<snip> I've asked the Oracle DBAs who report to me how they would do this in Oracle. Their answers started with -- "there's not a native CSV utility so you'd have to use..." or "you'd have to write..." If you were doing this in Oracle you'd be using a third-party tool or writing SQL. You'd have to manually trim any.... </snip> I not sure it is appropriate to compare an operating system to a database. Unless you want to consider OS/400 is considered an operating system and a database. From what I'm hearing OS/400 is about to be get some competition on the iSeries. My hope is that OS/400's features will continue to dominate on the box. <snip> You're so often generalizing about the industry, suggesting that everyone else does it the same way and the iSeries does it differently. Like you, for years I've worked on integration projects between VMS, Ingres, OS/400, various Unixes, Oracle, Win2K and NT, and SQL Server, to name a few. </snip> I guess if any of these databases use spaces to create fixed-formatted data then my statements about 'the industry' are wrong. <snip> You obviously get under my skin with your "typical iSeries" comments because I've worked with people like you for years. </snip> I suppose if we all went away your preferences can be left to dominate. Millions of fewer people on this planet would sure help as well. <snip> What I have been taking exception to is the Ken Slaugh dim view. </snip> Jim.. It is your option to defend what I post. But unless I have offended you personally then your personal attacks are out of line. Attacking the first amendment rights within this forum is counterproductive. Actually the reason this forum works so well is that we all can post our problems, opinions and concerns. Through the years I have seen many issues or situations posted on midrange-l which far too often are minimized or discredited altogether as opinion. When this happens, the person who posted doesn't get their resolution, which is exactly what they were hoping for in the first place. My original post was acted upon in this manner when I received replies stating my database was wrong and my network was screwed up. Neither of these statements were altogether true or productive which caused me to defend my needs. This forum has a great power to assist the midrange community. I happen to be very confident in stating my situations. I also feel that many more individuals could benefit greatly with this forum but are unwilling to risk it due to the likeliness of rejection.
