The current value can be displayed by typing EVAL varname, or put the
cursor on the variable and press F11.

The contents can be changed by using Eval varname = 'value'.

That's exactly how it works in STRDBG.  It "watches" for changes.  This
comes from older debugging technologies, where we watched memory
addresses or registers for changes, and stopped execution of the program
to see what triggered the change.

It's different, but does most of what you want.  Think of it this way:
if you haven't hit a watchpoint for a variable, you know the value of
the variable.  It's the same as it was the LAST time you looked <grin>.
The one thing you lose is the nice list of variables at the top of the
screen, which I wish we still had.  Maybe ask for an enhancement to
STRDBG.
