Also heard that it requires "ping" and we are blocking that too so that
might well be the issues.

Our Perles use PING when they are initially establishing the connection.

So when the corporate network people blocked PING (without telling us), the Perles continued to work fine until the iSeries was IPLed. The connections could not be reestablished until PING was unblocked.
