LPAR can save you money when it comes to IBM SW charges like SW Sub/Maint etc. Vendor SW well who knows, it depends

LPAR is tricky when it comes to HW. LPAR allocates HW at the IOP. I requires a dedicated Console, disk and any other HW needed FULL time buy a partition. You can get away with sharing tape/cd etc depending how/when you need it. All in all look at the Total cost over say a 3yr period.

You can LPAR a 720 "IF" it has multiple processors only and I think you must allocate whole processors on 720s vs fractional on the newer HW.

Talk to your BP or IBM and have them build an LPAR CFG...

Is there an IBM site that could show me an 820 machine, LPARed, would be
equivalent to two 720 2061 with a 1501 interactive feature, 1GB memory?

We are trying to justify an upgrade from our 720 to an 810, and we were
posed the question, "can we get a used machine to do the LPAR?" We want the
810 to LPAR into development and test, in one machine to reduce footprint
size and number of boxes. My understanding is the 820 is the best match
equivalent for LPARing a 720.

Or... can I LPAR a 720?

Thanks,
Loyd
