Sigh. If you can't have first-best, ya' take second-best or go hungry. Someday 
maybe I'll cost-justify compilers beyond CL and others that are "free"; I 
suppose divorce is always possible... :-) In the meantime, with commands like:

...among quite a few others and appropriate <help> text, a working sockets 
program can be tossed out quickly even by a novice. These make superb 
prototypes for functionality and can then be recast in a different suitable HLL 
-- not to mention that they actually work. (All CPPs courtesy IBM Custom 
Technology Center. CDOs and <help> text were mine.)

Amazing what can be done by searching out freebies, even from IBM.
