I am a very happy man! A year or so ago we experienced an unfortunate event with the supposable redundant power supplies in one of our 5065 towers, which resulted in a hard power down of our AS/400... This occurred during prime processing time too! Lots of jobs were running and after we were able to power up the system it took an additional 6 hours to rebuild several large access paths... Needless to say, this is a day I want to forget. Last Friday, during a test of our emergency power generator, something went wrong and ALL power to our computer room was cut off. For whatever reason, our UPS failed too! The result being another hard power down for our AS/400 while our primary applications were in use... There was one big difference this time though. After the 6 hour recovery last year, I implemented system-managed access-path protection (SMAPP) for our production ASP... SMAPP supports and automates the process of selecting which access paths should be protected on the system. All I had to do was turn it on. The system took care of everything else... I would like to share with everyone that this process REALLY works! The IPL time after last Friday's power outage was just 37 minutes! SMAPP is now my favorite acronym...
