I would guess, but it just a guess, that it would work with versions of OS/400 as long as IBM is supporting PowerPC ISA, which will probably be at least another decade since even the POWER5 is essentially the same ISA. Since the RISC boxes were introduced the only things that I have heard of going unsupported, is that with V5R1 there was a minimum amount of RAM needed that eliminated some of the older model 150's, and I guess there is limited support for some of the older bus architectures and add-in cards. If your 820 is PCI-based, you should not have any problems there. I do not think you will be able to get any guarantees out of anyone, but if S-Star's are not still supported 3 OS/400 releases from now then that will mean there is a heck of a lot of change coming our way. I suspect the Northstars will even still work in that timeframe. Correct me if I am wrong, but don't the new 810's still only have an S-Star in them? You do not get a POWER4 until the 825's. We need to get a new box, but can't wait for the next series, so we will probably get one with POWER4. I need to have a machine for testing with the "next release" of OS/400, but keep the primary workload on the "current release" (for example, at present time, V5R3 and V5R2 respectively). Due to the increased horsepower, my primary workload will move to the new POWER4 box. I would like to continue using the older SStar box for testing the "next release". My concern is how many more OS/400 releases will be supported on the 820 SStar? I'd like to get another couple of years/releases out of it (like maybe V5R3 + 2) but I wonder if that is being too optimistic. Anybody know the answer or know where I can find that information? (educated guesses based on experience definitely welcome) Thanks, -Marty _______________________________________________ This is the Midrange Systems Technical Discussion (MIDRANGE-L) mailing list To post a message email: MIDRANGE-L@xxxxxxxxxxxx To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, visit: http://lists.midrange.com/mailman/listinfo/midrange-l or email: MIDRANGE-L-request@xxxxxxxxxxxx Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l.
