I strongly doubt that telnet is unpredictable.  Much more likely it is
simply insecure.  PuTTY is a free windows implementation of SSH.  SSH
stands for Secure SHell and is a secure way of connecting to remote hosts.
If you have another linux (or any other unix) laying about then you don't
need putty, you can just use ssh.
