Turns out I read the wrong google entry first. There are many guesses as to 
the meaning of grep. The more likely, IMO, are

global regular expression [and] print (or substitute general for global)

general[-ized] regular expression parser (or substitute pattern-matcher for 
parser)

This is an instance of an interesting phenomenon, I think, viz., that a 
symbol or acronym has more functional meaning than what it originally stood 
for. The same thing has happened to LPEX, in our environment.
