Rick, I know this isn't what you want to hear either, but here's a suggestion: Create a real physical w/the data you want in the "view" as real fields along with the primary key. You can then create indexes over this new file. You can add triggers to the original file to keep this redundant file in sync with the real one. And for safe measure a simple report that compares the values stored on the file to those that should be there and reports differences (should always be an empty report). I've used this setup a couple of times on the iSeries and on SQLServer with great success. BTW, SQLServer 2000 introduced "indexed views" which are system-maintained versions of this very setup.
