Actually I asked this same question a couple of years ago in the

Basically, multiple RAID sets provides
- statistically lower chance of data loss with multiple failures.
- better performance during a failure

with a possible cost via decreased performance.

I'd be interested in seeing if anyone here has more detailed information.
