I think this will work, but not in Net.Data (which is where I'm using the
SQL). You can refer to variables in SQL, but I don't know how to change
their values in an SQL statement.

I haven't tried this but I think it will do the trick.
case counter
when < 1 counter = 1
other counter = counter + 1
end
