FYI, Java and JavaScript are two totally different things. In a stupid
moment of marketing-think someone borrowed the "Java" tag for
JavaScript, however, one is not based on the other. JavaScript is an
implementation of the ECMAScript spec used (mostly) as a client-side
scripting language with it's own rules and semantics. Java is a
full-fledged programming language that requires the Java Virtual Machine
(JVM) to run, and IMHO, should only run on the server (read: I hate
applets)

It's not uncommon to have JavaScript in a web app regardless of the
server side language (ASP, ASP.NET, JSP, CGI, PHP, ABC, 123, etc.)

As Adam mentions, I'd go with OLE/DB over ODBC, but in the end either
will perform well.
