You may want to check out www.timeshare400.com and/or www.netshare400.com -- 
they both offer "time-sharing" where you can simply telnet into an AS/400 and 
you get your own userID and disk space, etc., and it is only about $10 per 
month, and they have ALL the software development tools, etc., all properly 
licensed, etc. and they maintain it all for you (keeping up with PTFs etc.)

Unless of course you want to get a machine because you want to learn how to 
IPL, how to do back-ups, how to load the OS and other software, etc. ;-)
