Thanks for all the suggestions.  For the time being(since I just got
back from vacation) I have created a simple program call that changes
the a line in the script file.  I intend to look at Scotts' FTPAPI once
I get caught up.

Among the other suggestions, I would add that using Scott Klement's
FTPAPI is much more flexible than external scripting.
