At my former employer I've attached Intermec printers via Lexmark Marknet network adapters. We do a similar thing here except that HP JetDirect boxes are used going to PC servers. With the Marknet's we set them up as remote outq's. It didn't auto-config but as I recall it wasn't a big deal to get them up and running. Years ago I did what you are trying but with old DOS-based PC Support. It worked but it was a pain to keep running. If the PC had problems, the network went down, etc. you would have to reboot the PC and sign in again. Hopefully there was someone around to do that. With the Marknet's they just automatically reconnected and kept on going. Was it more expensive? No. You can save the cost of the PC and all of the support time. Did it work better? Yes. Maybe this isn't an option in your case but I would recommend trying it.
