I hope that I didn't give the impression that POP before SMTP was the only way to solve the problem. In fact, IMHO, POP before SMTP is one of the *worst* ways to solve the problem. But, John Ross specifically said he didn't understand how POP before SMTP worked -- so, wanting to help, I explained how it worked. Do you know if it's possible to make the iSeries SMTP server send AUTH/SASL when relaying mail? I figured SASL was usually sent from an MUA to an MTA, rather than being used between two MTAs?
