Based on the recommendations from this list (thanks to everyone), I added a significant number of records (10,000 to be exact) to the file. Here's what I found: File 1 - variable length fields, no allocate length - total file size = 1208320 bytes Files 2 - variable length fields, each field has an allocate length of 10 bytes - total file size = 1404928 bytes Files 3 - fixed length fields - total file size = 3727360 bytes I didn't think about the file overhead. I thought I would see significant differences in files sizes regardless of the number of records in the file. Now I know better. I certainly appreciate the help. Thanks. David Bocian
