ACS started out as Apparel Computer Systems in Concord, CA. It was founded in the 70's by Lou Jenkins. It was fairly successful in selling into the apparel industry. Platform was S/34, then S/36. I don't recall if he ever had a S/38 product. At any rate, the apparel industry began to get pressured by the retailers to get into what became known as EDI. Lou saw the benefits of being able to accommodate these requests, and sat a team of programmers down to write telecommunications software that interfaced between his package and the software being used by the retailers. T-Spec and ICF programming being what it was, I pitied those poor programmers (my company shared some office space with ACS). Eventually Lou sold ACS and focused his efforts on the EDI software. His next software company eventually became Premenos, which became Harbinger, etc., etc. When Lou sold Premenos, the story going around the Bay area was that he retired and went sailing. Perhaps those list lurkers in the San Francisco area can shed some additional light. Many of the programmers in the over 45 age group in the Bay area seem to have worked for ACS/Premenos at one time or another.
