Unfortunately, that's just a poorly designed server app, Brad.  The
server should have a positive EOM indication as Albert suggested, not
just a timeout.

Without any other information, it looks to me like the server is sending
those multiple responses one at a time, and sometimes the delay between
the responses is enough to trigger your timeout.  It's just a bad
design.
