I don't think our IS department, nor our software, has been gutted and 
replaced everytime we've done an upgrade.  And we've done many over the 
years.  Still running BPCS, Software Plus, whatever the nom du jour of our 
EDI package is, etc.  Have we lost anything?  Yes, OV/400.  But as much as 
it vexed me, if you asked around our company I am probably the only one 
who was upset.
All-in-all I think IBM has done an excellent job of preserving my 
investment in my software.
Was I upset by the interactive tax?  You betcha.  Would I cut off my nose 
to spite my face and stay on obsolete hardware and software because of 
that?  No.

Would I be more impressed by a vendor that supported V2R3 or a vendor who 
participated in the early ship program?  Early ship program - without a 
doubt.  I want someone who's software is going to run on the latest 
hardware and software.  Not someone who is going to be one of the later 
ones to be compatible.
