It's been a while since I've used an APC, but at least there used to be some
switches you could flip to tell it not to get too sensitive about voltage
fluctuations.

Subject: Re: APC Smart-UPS and as/400 ?

I had a Smart-UPS on my AS/400 until very recently. (We moved the 400 to
another data center.) Ordering the signal cable was no problem. The power
plugs were a pain. I ended adding two power distribution units to
accomodate them.

Once we had it installed, it worked great. If the power went out for real,
the system got the message and shut itself down if necessary. On the other
hand, every tiny blip seemed to set off the UPS. Almost daily, it would go
on and off battery in the space of a few seconds, which would send the
warning messages to QSYSOPR. Fortunately, this did not cause a shutdown.
That was probably more an issue with the circuitry in the computer room
than the UPS though. At least it confirmed that the signalling worked.
