Since you're already taking the hit for journalling, and evidently 
will have a comm link between primary and backup sites, why not check 
out MIMIX or other 'live backup' system?  Mimix takes the journal 
entries, moves the ones that actually touch data to the backup 
machine (ie skipping file opens/closes and other non-data-changing 
thingies), then applies the changes to the backup copy at the 
secondary site.
We have our backup machine in the same computer room as the primary 
machine (yes, if the 747 lands on our building...).  We do many of 
our backups from the copy on the 2nd machine, leaving the primary 
machine available to users.
