I haven't tried to set PATH this way, but perhaps you could send multiple 
commands in the QWSH command string. Set PATH in the first command, then have 
the java command after the semi-colon something like:

==>  qsh cmd('set PATH=$PATH:/somedir/somesubdir;java -classpath somefile.jar 
com.midrange.myapp.MyClass parm1  parm2')

It's _got_ to be worth a try.
