I've not bothered to look at this in probably 15 years, but doesn't
client access support some APIs like the old emulation did?  Way back
when, I just wrote my own PC program to access the screen buffer and
replace display attributes with a visible constant, or to examine the
contents of the buffer in real time.

It was pretty simple stuff -- didn't take that many lines of
interpreted BasicA code to do it at the time.  You may well be able to
do an equivalent program now.
