One klutzy quirk with this problem in Excel, and it can be a gotcha, when you use .csv files, is that it will not write a .csv file in the same way it reads it.

I forget what it did to me exactly, but the users were banging on Excel spreadsheets for a conversion and I had to wash them through a program on the AS400 and then give it back to them, back and forth several times, and I had to program something specifically to handle this.

I'm looking forward to getting to write straight to Excel spreadsheets. And to advocating as much as possible alternatives to Excel.
