The problem isn't how to extend VxxRxxMxx.  (at least not for another 80 
years).  It's how to program the remaining fields from VxRxMx to 
VxxRxxMxx.  Therefore if an application developer is already assuming that 
positions 1,3,5 contain VRM then they'll get their winkie stepped on if 
they adopt your format.
Theoretically an R could still increment in funny fashion.  Like this 
chronological order:  V3R0M5, V3R1M0, V3R6M0, V3R2M0, V3R7M0.  So it is 
nice to have some separation.  Another example would be this order: Domino 
5.0.10, 6.0.1, 5.0.11, 6.5.1, 5.0.12, 6.0.2, 6.5.2, ...  Where they kind 
of finger off but sooner or later slam back together or die off.

Couldn't IBM just replace VxxRxxMxx with W00001 (or W0001(001)), and use 
sequential increments (ie 2 , 3 etc)?

As long as 'W' comes after 'V' wouldn't this solve the collating seq 
problem? If not I'm definately missing something (which isn't the first 
time), and there is no need to explain it to me now, as hopefully by the 
time this becomes an issue, I'll be retired and drinking margaritas on a 
golf course somewhere in Florida.
