Thanks to Steven Morrison and Paul Tykodi, I was finally able to get twinax/IPDS set up on the printer.
Once the *IPDS function was enabled, all problems went away and the font issues even disappeared.
Many thanks for steering me in the correct direction.
A single typed page from IBM would have solved this MUCH earlier in the week.
The printer division of IBM is in mighty poor shape.
