The Info Center developers haven't upgraded the web site to use newer VM.   
I agree with what Joe said ... No backward compatibility in the VM ... Sigh ...

I haven't kept up with JVM issues, but why wouldn't newer JVM versions support 
fairly recently deployed applets?
