Originally, it was only up to the 2GB drives.  At some release (but I
don't recall whether V4Rx or V5R1), it could take the 4GB drives for
sure.  I also have a 40S with the 7117 expansion, and I have it fully
populated with 6607 (4GB) drives except for the load source which I
left mirrored on a pair of 6606's.

I don't know if support for the 8GB drives was every added, but can
confirm that 6607 drives work nicely.  And don't develop stiction near
as often.  I had replaced serveral 6606's while I ran them; I have yet
to have a 6607 fail on me.

I think you can get by with any of the 6607's.  Many of mine came in
the cages used on larger systems, and I just removed them and
installed the rails from my 6606 drives.

If you need any bare drive 6606's, I still have a stack of them left
on the shelf...  :)
