I have no disagreement with the overall points, but this tiny piece kind of 
snags my attention. I find it hard to swallow that Microsoft _couldn't_ 
continue supporting the old model for an indefinite period. Any company with 
$50billion in _cash_ can afford a LOT.

That's completely separate from whether they should or not, just whether it 
would be that big of a deal for them to do.
