There is a book with the 3581.  When you are trying to use your own CLP's 
versus TSM or BRMS I'd suggest changing the mode from "Random" to 
"Sequential".  I forget the sequence of buttons.  If you just can't find 
the book, drop a buzz.

PS:  I think it holds 7 tapes, not 6.  Two in back and five in front.  We 
have two 3581's.
