Don -

In this situation, one debugging strategy that I use is to start an 
interactive session on the target machine _while_ my FTP session is still 
running.

Then, after the failure occurs, from your interactive session on the target 
system, issue the command

WRKOBJLCK OBJ(USERID) OBJTYPE(*USRPRF)

Where USERID is the user id that you used to start the FTP session.

Then, find the active named QTFTPxxxxx and display its joblog to see the 
error messages generated.
