Joe, I think short names are iSeries specific so I don't see how you can avoid platform specific workarounds. ONE way to go is stick with SQL standard long names for platform independence and if you need to use meaningful short names in RPG on the iSeries, then define a logical file over the base physical using the DDS RENAME functionality. This way you could have meaningful short names for iSeries specific functions. It's probably easier just to have two flavors of CREATE TABLE in your build scripts, one iSeries specific with FOR clause for short names, and other platform independent. Elvis -----Original Message----- Subject: SQL CREATE TABLE command - ALIAS On a create table command, can I specify both the short and long names for a field, such that RPG will see the short name but SQL will see the longer name? Say I want to create a table named DUMMY with one field, DESCRIPTION. If I just do "CREATE TABLE DUMMY (DESCRIPTION VARCHAR(50))" I end up with a field named DESCR00001 with an alternate name of DESCRIPTION. I'd like to be able to also supply my own short name of DESC for the field. Joe
