you're not alone, unfortunately.

This is one of the reasons we in DC do a seminar series in which we bring 
an out of town speaker to DC to present solid relevant subject matter.  We 
actually do this in Richmond and Philly also as part of our seminar 
series.  Details at http://www.wash-midrange.org/seminars/   Also, you may 
want to checkout if indeed you do have a local user group 
(www.eserverusergroup.org) as many, like us in DC, have annual technical 
conferences that are 1-2 days in length.  And you'll find our JAM info at

These aren't intentional shameless plugs for WAM.  Folks that can't make 
it to a major conference need to know that there are still, in many cases, 
resources available to them.

Toronto, Orange County(CA), New England, Chicago, and many more user 
groups have these mini conferences and in many cases just for this reason.
