My understanding is that it will do 3 I/Os (sort of!) You'll have 3
reads of the row, but in the case of the 2nd and 3rd "read" the row is
already in memory so it's not like you're going to disk.

I will say this about functions, I've found them to be great -- usually.
However, they are a place to look if performance becomes an issue. I
know we took a sql statement from ~120 seconds to ~1 second by changing
a function call to a join.
