I was able to duplicate that and I get the error right in WDSC even before 
compiling or verifying.  SQL0090.  I suggest you submit a DCR to

DSPMSGD RANGE(SQL0090) MSGF(QSQLMSG)

Workaround would be to do what you are doing, or, to use a prepared 
statement.
