At an old job, three of us once were going to scratch and destroy some
drives in an old DEC alphaserver. Two hours later we were still trying to
get inside the machined aluminum disk casings... they were built like
tanks! Needless to say, it became a challenge and we spent some serious
time on it that day... later when we succeeded, one of the metallic
platters ended up in the organizations industrial/medical garbage shredder
machine (along with some tapes and other stuff). As we were disposing of
some other stuff, the guys running the machine came back from their smoke
break and we heard "What the hell is in this machine? TAPE???!!!". We
explained that we thought it could handle plastic tapes and then hightailed
it before it might choke on the disk platter. Ah... the good old days...

Subject: complete "scrubbing" of our data from the disk
We are going to get rid of some disks. How do I do a complete
bit-overwrite before disposal?
