Dave,

Try looking into APPC. Not sure if your VSE and OS/400 systems will cooperate, 
but it is worth a shot when you're on two IBM platforms.

Here's a good one for you all...  VSE to iSeries back to VSE

Is there some sort of common communication program(s)/facility wherein
a VSE program can call an iSeries CMD file (which is starting some REXX
programs) and when the REXX programs are finished, send return codes of
success/non-success back to the VSE programs so they can act
accordingly?
