I belive that validation *must* be made in the server, and it is very convinient to do it also in the browser, javascript is an exelent tool for that. Also, javascript can help filling the form, suplying reasonable defaults and offering dinamic options. BUT the validation in the browser is easy to disable, so, it is mandatory to validate in the server.

I was only pushing to use the functions that are made available to you
instead of "re-inventing the wheel".  Nothing to do with design but to use
the tools that are made available to you.
