Gary, I've got an unused 170 that I am looking to dispose of, that might
fill your needs.  It was running V5R3 and the tape drive was upgraded to
do that.

Going to a  170 interim is  fine, BUT be aware  there are  caveats.
The tape drive options to  migrate to an i5 series/system become 
limited. After V5R2
supported tape  drives which are comparable  dwindle  down to a few. 
Yes you can
use one for the external drives if you  have an expansion unit  to 
support  a 2729 feature card
