Our new HMCs came with SATA drives. Fans are louder than heck - you
thought the old ones were bad - WOW! These are screamers.

Chad - Where are you located? Maybe a shop local to you would let you
stop in and see one in person.

We bought 3 years of support with our HMC so I fully expect that much at
a minimum. It's a PC server; 3 years is not unreasonable. 5 years
should be easily doable as well, although I might expect at least 1 disk
replacement during that time (I believe the HMC uses IDE drives).

OK, to further my questions on HMCs:

What sort of longevity is to be expected from a HMC? Here's our
situation:

In a few months we'll have 3 520s (one is currently an 800 and will
become a 520 soon) with 2 520s in one building and 1 520 in another
building 1/2 mile distant. We are considering getting into the HMC
world (with no need/plans for LPAR or CUOD) and putting one HMC in each
location cabled so either HMC can manage each of the 3 machines in both
locations (we have plenty of fiber avail. that will facilitate
private/open networks for the
HMC/system connections). For the one machine that currently needs
console
access in both locations we have a twinax/switchbox setup, but don't
want to have to duplicate this for the box that's moving out to the 2nd
location, we are also interested in moving away from the current twinax
switchbox setup.

Our upgrade cycle for the 3 machines is roughly every 3 years and we
have historically leased all 3 machines. Two of the three get replaced
at once and the third gets replaced the following year. In looking at
the HMCs, we're trying to see how they would fit into the replacement
cycle we're currently on with iSeries servers. I'm trying to get a feel
for how this would work best... is it reasonable to expect 3 years from
a HMC version?

Also, another question that comes to mind is how difficult/disruptive it
is to change a current iSeries over from a twinax console to HMC?

When TCP/IP is ended on the server, it maintains full TCP/IP
connectivity to the private/open connections to the HMC, correct?

Any thoughts are appreciated, i'm picking through the HMC section of an
LPAR redbook... it's the best resource i've read so far, but have alot
to learn on the HMC. I need to go visit someone who's running one...

Ours cost about $6100 including the color monitor, doesn't include the
rack. We have rack mounted 520 with the HMC, 520, Xserver and 5081 in
it.

Does anyone know an approximate cost for a HMC setup for a smaller 520+
system?
