No, it's not that.  I ran the program/display file on the same data
before and after.  I don't believe it's the data.

your data! When I get this error, often times it is because the data I
am displaying contains non displayable characters.  Try to scan and
replace every char of your display fields that is less than x'40' with
x'1f'.
