IMHO, wouldn't it very far easy doing this with printer file Open/Close 
control?
pseudocode:

   CL:    OVRPRTF xxxxx   HOLD(YES)

   RPG:  <startTransaction>

           OpenPrinterFile
           Get (from File Feedback area data) File ID, SpoolNo, ... etc

       </startTransaction>

           ............
           normal process, with writes: detail and total lines
           ............

              <endTransaction>

           if  (everything was OK) then   RLSSPLF  ......
                                               else    CancelSpool
           (ENDSPLF ...)

       </endTransaction>
