Hi, Larry:

Keep in mind that since we are discussing the English language, the only
consistent rule is that almost all rules have exceptions. Further,
sometimes the exceptions have rules, and sometimes they do not.

Verb phrases with a pronoun object can often be used with the pronoun
"splitting" the verb phrase, and remain clear (which is the main point of
grammar, really). "I wore out the 5.5 mm socket." But, "I wore it out."

Like troubleshooting printer problems, at times grammar can be a black art
more than a science.
